The Mercedes is named after General Emil Jellinek's daughter, Mercedes Jellinek, who was born in 1889. The story goes that the General had bought a 23 hp Daimler car and had entered it in the race 'Tour de Nice' in 1899. He decided to name the car Mercedes at the time of the race and he won. He then encouraged Daimler to create larger and better balanced cars and became the only sales agent in many countries. Daimler thought of using 'Mercedes' as a name for the new cars.
